Cheap Plastic Cracks (Lenovo Warranty doesn't cover) March 11, 2010 W. Piper 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Lonevo S10-2 is a beautiful and ultra portable netbook. It is not the most powerful 'laptop' on the market but for surfing the web and word processing it is perfect.
POSITIVES
Gorgeous Design
Ultra Portable
3 USB Ports
Card Reader
Never gets very hot
NEGATIVES
1. Big Negative and why it gets one star. There is a design flaw in the plastic monitor frame. After a few months a crack develops which is constantly spreading. This is not as a result of a bump or a drop (my laptops are treated with kid gloves) but in my opinion due to pressure on the frame from the hinge itself.
The crack develops close to and on the laptop hinge. I have read other reviews online referring to the same problem at the left hinge or both hinges, so there is clearly a design flaw. To compound the problem Lenovo does not wish to honor this flaw as a warranty claim. For this alone I would suggest persons NOT buy this product.
2. Small keyboard is okay to use for short periods of time, but any lengthy typing is strenuous.
3. There is a problem with the sleep mode where it will wake up on its own while it is closed and this results in the battery being drained or the machine getting very hot if left in a case.
4. The speakers are very poor and located under the keyboard. As such headphones will be needed to properly listen to audio.
In summary I would love to love this laptop. I really wish everything was perfect with it. But it has a terrible design flaw and a manufacturer who appears yet to recognize and admit it. As such avoid the headache and avoid this machine. There are many other options in the same price range with the same specs.
Best Netbook with the best price! December 1, 2009 Z. WANG 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is definitely one of the best netbook on the market, and considering the price, this Lenovo S10-2 Netbook IS THE BEST. I am surprised that there are so few reviews here.
I got this product two weeks ago, and it is working great! Battery life is 6-7 hours. Looks very cool and is indeed very stable. You can enlarge the view on the screen just with the touchpad, which is very convenient for a netbook with small screen.
One big advantage is the price. There are too much similar netbooks on this level. Some of them are more popular, bu they are really not that different. So the price become the advantage of this netbook.
Lenovo makes very reliable computer with surprisingly cheap price. I feel very comfortable carrying it with me wherever I go.
Enjoy it!
Sweet! November 30, 2009 Kornelius Silbermann 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First of all, it's definitely not a desktop replacement and not a laptop (or notebook). It delivers what it promises and has a very neat resolution. The keyboard is obviously small, but without being too cramped. It doesn't get too warm and it's quite light. I highly recommend it for anyone who moves a lot and needs something more than just a hand-held device for activities such as communication, text processing, presentations, and maybe some online entertainment.
Lenovo (Very Reluctantly) Acknowledges Sleep Mode Problem October 21, 2009 R. L. Hodges (Layton, UT, United States) 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
I called up Lenovo and asked them about this machine's bad habit of waking up from sleep mode and running its own battery down while you're not aware. It is a chronic problem that is frequently mentioned in thorough reviews for this model.
Every person I was transferred to played stupid and acted like this problem doesn't exist. I was finally transferred to a tech support person who was willing to acknowledge that this model does indeed have a problem with coming out of sleep mode all on its own, causing it to heat up and drain its battery.
Tech support also confirmed that there is no fix for this problem, and that the workaround/remedy is to not use sleep mode but to use hibernation instead. Hibernation, for those who may not know, is a Windows feature that saves everything in memory to disk before doing a full shutdown and reads it all back into memory when starting back up. Think of it as sleep mode being transferred to the hard drive. It takes longer to hibernate and wake back up because of all the disk reading and writing, but it's actually a cool function and a good alternative. It's also still a lot faster than normal shutdown and rebooting, and still allows you to keep all programs open just like sleep mode. The biggest plus is that your battery doesn't slowly drain while hibernating like it does when it's sleeping. For what it's worth, hibernation works extremely well in Windows XP, I have used it extensively before. Same with Vista.
But regardless, the Lenovo S10-2 does come from the factory with the manufacturer's defect of waking back up from sleep mode on its own, causing it to heat up and drain its battery.
It is possible that what is waking the S10-2 up is the camera. I read a review that said that when the author disabled/uninstalled the webcam software, it improved the situation, but did not entirely solve it. If you go into the BIOS and completely disable the webcam, it might solve this problem entirely. I will try it on mine when it arrives (I bought one anyway).
So anyway, there it is directly from Lenovo themselves - they have very relucantly acknowledged to me over the phone that this is a problem with this laptop, and there is no fix - just the hibernation workaround, which for most, should be an acceptable workaround in most cases (but still a bandaid to a flawed product). I was also directly told that no fix is planned. I would assume that if they release a 10S-3, ti will not bave this problem. The S12 model, however, does not have this "insomnia/wake for no reason" problem when sleep mode is used. Only the S10-2 has this problem. It's too bad, because the S12 battery life is only half that of the 10S-2.
Would have been 5 stars if product had no defects.
Would have been 4 stars if Lenovo acknowledged problem/had fix.
3 stars because this otherwise great model has a well-known defect and Lenovo indeed knows about but won't acknowledge until you rub their noses in it.
Loving this thing October 5, 2009 Carlos Aguirre 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Im gonna start saying that this is such a nice netbook, from the design to the functionality, size and weight.
Some say this has an issue with the fan and claim that is too noisy but thats not true mine is very quiet, doesnt overheats.
keyboard is good not as normal keyboard but you get used too it.
the 6 cell battery is a charm, with low brihtness you can get up to 8 hours.
some key features are 1key recovery, web cam mic, face recognition.
I love lenovo this is my first netbook and im already using it more than my primary laptop (wich is an ideapad y510)its just so easy to get on the web.
It has an quick boot option that puts you on the web or skype or im in less than 30secs, this option is so handy.
overall i recommend this netbook its good on design, price, and performance, i have never had any issue with my other lenovo and this one seems to be good as well.
